Be Thou My Vision |

|
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, Be thou my wisdom, thou my true word, Be thou my battle shield, sword for the fight; |
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise: Thou mine inheritance now and always; Thou and thou only first in my heart; High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won, |
| But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. | |
The hymn, Be Thou My Vision, dates back to 7th century Ireland. In the early days of what some call the Dark Ages, thousands of Celts embraced the Gospel of Christ. A nameless convert penned the beautiful words, Rob tu mo bhoile, a Comdi cirde, the beginning of this poem praising the True Light. Mary Elizabeth Bryne (Maire ni Bhroin), and Irish scholar in the early 20th century, translated the poem into English. The hymn tune is also early Irish.
Some years ago, Be Thou My Vision became the de facto theme hymn of PAideia Classical Education. In a program full of hope and vision, we intentionally lay down personal ambition and embrace the direction of God alone.
